Description of the Tour

This tour allows you to see some of the most amazing mountain landscape of Tuscany!

We start biking up to the pass "Passo delle Radici" (1.529 mt) using a beautiful large road in the forest with smooth curves. Then we head down towards Castelnuovo Garfagnana (350 mt): this road is quite steep, but allows you to enjoy a beautiful view of all the Garfagnana Mountains and Hills with the Castiglione's Castle dominating the area.

We then take a  valley road surrounded by high steep rocky mountains; we slowly go up to a tunnel (1.100 mt) travelling across the Alpi Apuane (Marble Mountains): on the other side you can enjoy one of the most amazing views in Italy: the white of the Marble Mountains; the green of the forest; the deep blue of the sea in front of you! Enjoy it, relax, and take a picture!

We then head slowly down to the Versilia Sea (and why not plan a stop at Colonnata, the town that’s world famous for the “lardo di colonnata”?) where we find large flat roads. Then we start our return riding through the Lucca Hills and Garfagnana Area. The hills are quite smooth and we come across some beautiful villages (Fabbriche di Vallico, Pescaglia) the Pentecosi Lake and the Vagli Lake. This is an artificial lake which submerged the old village of Vagli: you can see the bell tower standing up in the middle of the lake!

The last part of the tour starts from Vagli Lake and, after riding along mountain roads in the beautiful forest of chestnut and beech trees, leads us to the pass of Passo Pradarena (1.662 mt). From there we will reach the hotel via a comfortable road that follows the mountain crest.

Please note: The route shown is approximate, and may change significantly referring to journey times and the state of roads and asphalt after the winter and spring.

This tour allows you to enjoy some of the most beautiful hilly landscapes of Tuscany!

We start biking down from the Hotel through "Passo dell'Abetone" until we reach Popiglio (600 mt.) and the Lima River Valley. From here we take a beautiful valley road near the river that leads us to Bagni di Lucca.

From Altopascio we bike up over the Pisa Mountains (800 mts) and then to Buti, where we can have a look at the famous castle and at the ancient Medici Villa. From Buti, after a wide road towards Pontedera, we ride through the Livorno Hills (Collesalvetti area, about 400 mts above sea level), where we can enjoy amazing smooth hills with the view of the sea on the West.
We then ride through the hills until Volterraone of the most beautiful medieval towns in Tuscany.

We then proceed to the plane area near Pistoia and ride up towards the hotel via road SS66-SS12: a large road that leads us to Pievepelago through the valley and green forests.

We ride from the hotel on the wide and beautiful SS12 and SS 66 Roads.

After about 40 Kms we arrive in Pistoia, where we can see one of the most beautiful medieval place of Italy: Piazza del Duomo (read about it on Wikipedia), with its Bell Tower, Cathedral, Bishop's Palace, octagonal Baptistery, Justice Palace, and Catilina Tower.

We then ride up the Florence Hills toward Vinci, the village where Leonardo was born: here we have a beautiful view on the Florence hills and can visit the ancient village and the birthplace of Leonardo.

Close to Vinci, we reach the small village of Carmignano, where in a small church we can see one of the masterpieces of Mannerism: the painting Visitation by Jacopo Pontormo (read about it on Wikipedia and here too): this painting, with its acid colours and extreme symmetry and sense of space, is a milestone in the transition from Reinassance to Mannerism.

A few kms from Carmignano stands Artimino, with its spectacular Medicean Villa (the villa of the House of Medici, lords of Florence from XIV to XVI century). The Villa, called "La Ferdinanda" was built (1596-1600) by the famous architect Buontalenti and is considered his masterpiece.

Riding down towards Florence we can see another Medicean Villa in Poggio a Caiano: it was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo for Lorenzo de Medici (read about the Villa on Wikipedia). ). It is a masterpiece of the Renaissance and centuries later it was also used by the kings of Italy. If you like, you can visit it!

The Florence hotel is only few kms from Poggio a Caiano.
