Every year on 28 May, the international leather community celebrates Leather Pride Flag Day, marking the anniversary of the Leather Pride Flag’s presentation in 1989. This symbolic date represents more than the birth of a visual emblem: it recognises a community, its culture and its values.
Designed by Tony DeBlase, the Leather Pride Flag emerged at a time when the leather and fetish world was seeking ways to recognise itself, tell its story and assert its existence in a public space that was often hostile or simply unaware of its reality. Like many community flags, it was intended as an open symbol rather than a rigid definition, bringing together different people, experiences and perspectives through shared values.
Its black and blue stripes, interspersed with white and marked by the distinctive red heart, are now among the world’s most recognisable symbols of leather culture. Their meaning has never been codified in a single interpretation — deliberately left open by the creator — but over the years the community has recognised values deeply rooted in its identity: trust, respect, consent, authenticity, solidarity, belonging and freedom of self-expression.
A flag matters because it makes visible something that might otherwise remain unseen. It is collective memory, mutual recognition and a meeting point. It allows people to say “we are here”, even when they come from different cities, countries, languages or personal histories. It brings people together without erasing differences, offering continuity between generations, experiences and communities.
Within the leather world, this takes on an even deeper meaning. The Leather Pride Flag represents a space where identities, desires, relationships and ways of experiencing the body, desire and vulnerability can find expression through consent, awareness and respect. It is more than an aesthetic symbol or decoration: it invokes a culture of codes, values, responsibility and human connections.
For Leather Club Roma, celebrating this day means recognising an international tradition while reaffirming a practical commitment today: creating safe spaces, encouraging social connection and culture, building community and promoting an open, inclusive and informed vision of the leather world. Through events, cultural gatherings, social activities and dialogue, LCR works every day to ensure that the flag’s values remain real, lived experiences rather than abstract symbols.
A flag has value only when a community continues to give it meaning.
Happy Leather Pride Flag Day.
