Editorial note: This is an English adaptation of a historical article in the Leather Club Roma archive. It preserves the subject and its message about personal boundaries. Outdated preparation instructions, claims of complete safety, and advice involving diuretics, forced fluid intake or urine ingestion have not been reproduced. It is not a word-for-word translation.

What does “watersports” mean?

Within leather and fetish culture, watersports — often shortened to WS — refers to consensual adult play involving urine. Other terms include pissing, golden shower and golden rain. The historical article associates this interest with a bright yellow bandana in the hanky code.

Is it for me?

People have different interests and boundaries. Curiosity does not create an obligation to participate, and disinterest does not need to be overcome. You do not have to share every fetish to belong to the leather community.

The original article explores the tension between desire, embarrassment and social expectations. This edition treats personal choice as the starting point: you may be interested, undecided or simply uninterested. Every answer deserves respect.

Talk about boundaries first

Before any consensual adult play, discuss what each person wants, what is off limits, and how to stop. Agree on clear communication and check in throughout. Consent to one activity does not imply consent to another, and anyone can change their mind.

No partner, dominant or “master” has the right to pressure someone into an unwanted activity. Refusing an activity does not make you less leather. Expectations should be discussed beforehand, rather than assumed from a role, a bandana or previous experience.

A note on the historical preparation advice

The original archive text included suggestions involving Lasix (furosemide) and other ways to increase urination. This adaptation does not recommend using medicines for fetish play. Furosemide is a prescription medicine, and the NHS lists dehydration among its possible side effects. Follow your prescriber’s instructions and consult a pharmacist or doctor about medication questions.

Culture and care

The key message retained from the original is to discuss your limits honestly with your partner before a session. A community built on freedom also makes room for saying no, stopping and choosing a different way to connect.
